Count or Estimate the Number of Bulbs
Count or estimate the number of bulbs that each track/receptacle will be required to turn on. For rope light, count or estimate the number of feet. Rope light is generally 7 watts per foot.
Insert your numbers into this formula.
Total Number of Bulbs X Bulb Wattage ÷ 110 = Amps Needed

For Rope Light
Total Number of Feet X 7 Watts ÷ 110 = Amps Needed

Example 1:
Let’s say the most bulbs that will be plugged into a single track/receptacle is 250 bulbs.
Each bulb is 7 watts.
Your formula would look like this.
250 Bulbs X 7 watts ÷ 110 = 16 Amps

This example would be fine for a 4 Track Chaser, 6 Track Chaser or a 10 Track Chaser, because the load will be less than their max amp rating of 18 amps per track/receptacle. This example would not work for our 3 Track Chaser because it’s max load is 10 amps. The animated diagram below that illustrates how a 4 Track Chaser distributes a load.

4 Track Chaser
Load Distribution Example
4 Track Chaser
Example 2:
Let’s say you want to use a 3 Track Chaser but your load is 16 amps and over it’s max rating of 10 amps. We would recommend a 18 Amp 4 Track Chaser set in 3 Track Chase mode. This is what makes our controllers universal. Our larger chaser controllers can always drop down and perform the same sequences as a smaller controller.
Example 3:
Let’s say you have figured that your display will use well over 18 amps. This is easily remedied with a custom programmable controller. Custom Programmables can accommodate any amperage rating.
Note: Important information if you are considering a Smart Chaser Controller

Smart Chaser Controllers
A Smart Chaser has over 100 different chase patterns available. Some of these patterns will turn on more than one track at a time. A Smart Chaser’s max Amp rating is 18 Amps on at one time. Therefore it is important to count the number of bulbs that will be on at any one time and add them to the formula. The example below illustrates a setting that will turn on more than one track at a time.

8 Smart Track Chaser
Set in 5 Track Build Up Pattern
4 Track Chaser
The formula for this example display.

Track 1 will turn on 18 bulbs
Track 2 will turn on 18 bulbs
Track 3 will turn on 18 bulbs
Track 4 will turn on 18 bulbs
Track 5 will turn on 18 bulbs
———————————–
Total 90 bulbs on at one time.
Each bulb is 7 watts

90 Bulbs X 7 watts ÷ 110 = 5.73 Amps
This result will be fine because it is less than the 18 Amps max on at one time for a 8 Track Smart Chaser. If your load exceeds the max amp rating then you will need to use a custom programmable controller.
